About John D. Whitaker

My family first came to America from Ireland in the late 1800’s.  My grandfather was a rancher who owned a ranch north of Casper.  My father opened his law office in 1948 here in Casper.  My family has now been engaged in the practice of law for over 65  years here in central Wyoming.  My father later became the Natrona County District Attorney.  He was also very active in Wyoming politics.  In 1960 he ran for the United States Senate and appeared in a campaign commercial with then Senator John F. Kennedy.

I was born here in Casper in 1950 and attended school here until my graduation from High School.  After high school, I moved to Laramie where I earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Economics at the University of Wyoming.  I entered law school at the University of Wyoming in 1984, and in 1985 I was appointed to be the student director of the Defender Aid Clinic.  I supervised a class of 3rd year law students who prepared and argued criminal case appeals before the Wyoming Supreme Court with the assistance of the faculty director.  I later graduated from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1986.  After passing the bar in the fall of 1986, I opened my own law practice here in Casper in the same office that I have today.
My practice is primarily a trial practice.  Initially, I did some contract work for the Wyoming Public Defender’s office.  In that capacity I handled and tried a number of serious felony cases.  During the 1990s I continued to represent criminal defendants and I tried a number of Civil Rights and employment cases in the Wyoming Federal District Court.  In early 2000, I began to focus more on catastrophic 18-wheeler crashes.  These types of cases involve complicated engineering and regulatory issues.  Early in 2013, we completed a lengthy jury trial in Federal Court here in Wyoming over a serious 18-wheeler/automobile crash.  The jury in that case returned a verdict in favor of our clients for $2.3 million dollars.

I am very happily married to Peggy Whitaker. Together, we have raised 3 exceptional children: Sam, Danielle and Catherine. Peggy is a litigation paralegal and is also the office manager for the Whitaker Law Office.

I am rated AV by Martindale Hubble. This is a rating given to lawyers by other lawyers and judges. AV is the highest rating possible. I am also rated by U.S. News as one of the “Best Lawyers in America.”

At our law office, you will find an experienced Wyoming Trial lawyer. If we take your case, you will be dealing with me. I do not send inexperienced associates to handle the very important cases we take. We do not represent big corporations or insurance companies. We represent the people they hurt. If you have been injured as the result of someone else’s wrongful conduct give our office a call. We know how to deal with bullies and we can help level the playing field to give you peace of mind.
